Kudos Deepak. Sometimes I feel I'm just one cigarette away from starting again. Man, it is a difficult habit to kick!

sometimes I long for a cig after office hours or after food as my Office hours are not always fixed. yesterday I went for night shift(10pm to 6am without sleep) and when I woke up for Lunch,I needed one and had one after Lunch(shame on me). will not have another for the rest of the day.

but I WANNA QUIT
Hope this thread helps all(and me) to quit.

Guys, I really commend your resolve. I have never smoked a cigarrette all my life and do not really know how hard it is to quit. But from all that I have read/heard it is one hell of a goal and you need to be very determined, which I see you all are. Great to see that the passion for cycling is bring about this change. I think we do need a distraction to quit any habit. When the distraction becomes pure joy, it sure helps!

Congratulations to everyone who have already quit and good luck to others in keeping your resolve. Keep it going and well done!

I'm thinking, though, that steak stuffed with tiramisu would be awful... but then I'm not a smoker.

heheh.... Pranav at his usual best again :P

Prabuddha and all the rest of the guys here. Great to see your resolve and determination. Smoking is bad. I do not like the whole idea at all to be frank. Until my 12th I would cringe at the sight of my dad smoking. So much so that I made him quit. He was clean for a few years. But back to it. I guess you have the resolve from within.Since I have never and will never smoke I cannot say what the feel is that people want to use it to add that creepy smell to their and neighbours clothes. But well going through my architecture course I realized most folks girls, boys n profs alike seemed to smoke. So now I am more of- You can spoil your lungs but please dont do it around me. But more on a silent watch.

A few months back when doing the Gorai stretch in mumbai one of our cycling friends was so out of breath. That he realized how much smoking was killing his lungs. I guess he was determined and kind of cleaned up his act a bit(since he had to ride the TFN). Recent times before the TFN on one of the rides all of us noticed his improvement and was really worth a praise.

So next time you want someone to quit smoking. Get them on your bike and make them climb a hill.. or maybe make them ride with RNair :D
Future GOALS If all goes well: Upgrade to new road bike in 2010 . Aim for TFN 2010!
A TRIBUTE: My Hero Hawk has wonderfully lived its mark as a single speed. Covering major part of Mumbai City-both by day and night and the Konkan coast; more to come

Whoa! I never knew of this thread. Its been days since I lurked on this site what with the slowdown and trying to keep afloat. I have to say something here as smoking has caused and continues to cause hardships to my family.

I am not a smoker. Never was. My dad was a chronic smoker. He smoked atleast 40 a day. The rest of us tried really hard to get him to quit but it just never happened. He finally got a stroke that damaged his brain and he's paralysed now for the rest of his life. You guys may not be able to imagine all the things that we had to do for him and it has scarred our emotions. His doctors gave it in writing that something would befall him as his condition was bad and he still refused to quit. In all of this, my mum's the one who suffers the most as she has to take care of his every need every day while he's bedridden. He lost his speech too and now solely depends on us for all his needs.

Know this. I applaud you guys who have quit smoking. I am not the courageous one. People say that courage is "not knowing the meaning of fear". That's false. Courage is knowing your fear, facing it, and then overcoming it. So those of you who have been there, done that and then quit through sheer willpower need to be applauded. You're setting an example for all of us to face our fears. Congratulations on that.

My first paragraph is meant to put the guilt into those of you who can't quit. If you want your children and wife and loved ones to take care of you when you're bedridden, go ahead and smoke. If you want your child to take your bedpan and wash it, go ahead and smoke. But remember this, once that stage comes, all your prayers and regret come to naught.

Aquashankar,

Very sad story and thats exactly what goes thru my mind often. I have a young daughter and cannot imagine her being without a father at such a young age. At the risk of sounding mushy/emotional - let me tell the younger guys here something.

I have now given up but I really deeply regret the 20 years of damage that I have caused to myself and indirectly my family. I know that I will be affected - either with illness or an earlier death than if I had either never smoked or if I had given up earlier.

So give up NOW.............Everyone will eventually give up [either because of disease or death] so why not now and enjoy the remaining years in better health. Make no mistake - smoking WILL KILL YOU.

Many will procrastinate, like I did, and say next year, new years resolution etc but believe you me - it will go on and on and years will pass with more and more irreversible damage to your body.

This is your smokers lung with a cancer:

Deepak, I think you should be proud of yourself for having quit finally. Do not regret your past now because each one of us have something to regret about ourselves. The main thing is you've quit.

I am unable to share with all of you another experience regarding smoking on this forum as it is too personal to be told. But just know that passive smoking affects in almost as bad a way as active smoking.

The picture you've put there is quite a "nice" one. Here's an image of a healthy lung that people can compare it to:

Keep it going guys. The quitting I mean. Its worth it.

Rajesh, you never fail to surprise me. You smoked almost as much as my dad and then quit. You're an inspiration.

I am sorry to hear about the damage that smoking has done to your family Shankar.

Deepak as shankar has put it, you should be proud of your achievement of stopping before its too late. Its a pretty scary picture of the cancer ridden lungs there.

Guys if this is not enough motivation for one to quit smoking.. Well.. GOD help that one.

I've never smoked but was always scared for my brother. I was glad that he gave up 3 years ago and didn't go back to it.

Fantastic - remember the first week is the hardest and always tell your self that if you slip you are back to day 1 again - which is really the most difficult.

I smoke either in office during breaks or on my drive home. In office I have kept a pack of mint and some gum to distract me if I feel like a puff. In the car, I am playing my favourite music loud. The music and the traffic does not give me time to think of anything more. Its worked so far.

Umm... me2 smoker and trying to quit
and I thought I was the only one... I rode the first day of TFN with my hero hawk.. and cursing ( self ) all the while as I tried to navigate up Chamundeshwari hills...
I'm always quitting... that day too, after all that, I had a Mr.Hyde moment and succumbed to a quick drag outside the station in Mysore.

Now I'm eating gutkha when Mr Hyde strikes, in the hope that its too disgusting to keep up the habit... but sometime succumb to a drag too. Heck I sometimes worry if I'll end up getting hooked to both.

Nows the time., Nows the time, Nows the time, Nows the time.....
That graph by pranav was dead-on....

You know what I did, Vinay? I went ahead and declared on this forum that I was going to give up. When I feel like a drag, I log in to this site, even on my phone, if required, and get to this thread. There in clear letters, is my statement that I am trying to give up smoking. I ask myself, can I honour my words? I just tell myself I can.
I am not saying I have quit the habit, since every once in a while, I feel like a smoke. Just some time back, I felt like it. I went and made myself a pot of nice Malabar Coffee, and am enjoying it now. I suppose, one needs to distract oneself from the wish to smoke.

I am not an expert, but maybe this can help you. All the best to you.
