Sunset Bay, Living up to its Name!

The sun was setting in the horizon and the moon was rising in the east when we reached Sunset Bay. We had started riding from Bangalore in the morning to Masinagudi and we stayed in Sunset Bay for a night. It is situated near the village of Kannambaadi, on the backwaters of KRS, 25 kms from the city of Mysore.

We let our luggage be on the bike and walked down to the shore just take in the view. The place was quiet and peaceful except for the sounds from birds ready to roost and an occasional cricket. The seemingly endless water body reflecting the deep orange sky with dark silhouettes of trees, rid us of our tiredness.

The place is non intrusive, in the sense that natural materials have been used wherever possible in the tree houses and the cottages. The place has very low lighting. The lamps that lined the paths leading to the rooms were solar powered and actually complemented the moonlight from the almost-full moon. The ripples from the jet black water glisten like a million diamonds in the moonlight. What an unforgettable sight!

A bonfire was started and we settled down around it, sipping the beverage of our choice. After a while of chatting and laughing, we decided to check out one of the tree houses. A flight of wooden stairs got us into the room which was simple and tastefully done. A sliding door within separates the bath from the room. The subtle lighting in the room and the wooden walls, floor and ceiling created a beautiful ambiance.

We were served a tasty dinner of rotis, dhal, rice, chicken curry, rasam and papads. After some more chit-chatting, we were taken to our room. The cottage we stayed in was spacious and had a rustic look. One of the walls in the cottage was lined with jute, and the other wall had a couple of colorful vintage paintings. The red-oxide flooring combined with mellow light from the lamps complemented the jute lined walls nicely..a perfect setting for a good night’s sleep.

Sipping hot tea, I walked around the property the next morning. The sun had risen and miles of clear backwaters looked magnificent. One could just look at it for ages and not realize the time. On the shore opposite to the property is the Venugopalaswamy temple. The temple was submerged by the backwaters when the dam was built and is now being restored by the government after having moved the structure, stone by stone. The water is abundant with fresh water fishes and fishermen in coracles are a common sight.

There were a couple of coracles here too. We got a bit adventurous, and got into one of them. It took a while to figure it out, but then Abhi and I managed to row some distance off the property. Ah! What fun! But we did not want to get too far, since we had to row back too! (Actually I made him do most of the rowing... heh!)

After breakfast, we took leave of the place to continue our journey. We had spent very little time at the place, but loved every bit of it. As a place for a quick getaway, Sunset Bay is a beautiful find.
